BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari demands central forces at RG Kar Hospital after mob attack

Adhikari alleges evidence tampering and police inaction in wake of trainee doctor’s rape-murder

Kolkata August 15 2024 : Suvendu Adhikari,  Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, has demanded for the deployment of central paramilitary forces at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital after a violent mob attack occurred shortly after midnight. The attack came amidst the continued  protests over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the Kolkata-based institute.

In a letter addressed to Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Adhikari accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of orchestrating the assault to destroy evidence related to the horrific incident. The attack, which targeted the hospital while doctors were protesting, has sparked outrage and demands for increased security.“The West Bengal government and Kolkata Police have allowed criminals to establish a stronghold at RG Kar Medical College and now permit TMC goons to destroy evidence and intimidate protesting doctors,” Adhikari claimed in his letter, shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Adhikari further criticized the response of local authorities, alleging that the mob even attempted to enter the girls’ hostel while police officers took refuge inside toilets. He urged the Home Secretary and the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to deploy central armed forces to prevent further damage and ensure the protection of evidence. The attack occurred on the eve of India’s 78th Independence Day, coinciding with a “Reclaim the Night” protest organized by women across Kolkata and West Bengal to demand justice for the murdered trainee doctor. The CBI, directed by the Calcutta High Court, has taken over the investigation from the Kolkata Police.
