Mumbai July 25 2024 : Heavy rainfall in Mumbai has significantly disrupted operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and caused widespread transport issues across the city. The intense downpour led to poor visibility, prompting a temporary suspension of flight services at 10:36 AM. Flights resumed just 19 minutes later once visibility improved to 1,000 meters, and the Runway Visual Range (RVR) reached 1,200 meters.
Air India quickly issued an advisory on social media, warning passengers of potential delays for flights to and from Mumbai. The airline advised travelers to allow extra time to reach the airport due to expected slow traffic and waterlogging in various parts of the city.
The severe weather also forced the closure of the Andheri subway to vehicular traffic due to waterlogging, adding to Mumbai’s traffic congestion woes.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a nowcast warning at 10:00 AM, forecasting intense rainfall in Mumbai and surrounding areas, including Thane, Raigad, and parts of Pune for the next few hours.
Railway services have been affected as well, with the Panvel-Chouk line suspended since 09:42 AM due to flooding. Consequently, Train No. 12126 has been rerouted via Kalyan. Central Railway officials reported that local trains are operating at reduced speeds due to poor visibility and high winds.
Several areas, including the Bhandup pumping station, Vikhroli, and near King Circle, have reported waterlogging. Additionally, a tree uprooted near Matoshree Bungalow in Bandra East around 6 AM led to the temporary diversion of BEST buses for approximately an hour.
The city’s infrastructure is under significant strain as it grapples with the effects of the heavy rains, impacting daily life and mobility.
