Sangrur: A petrol bomb attack on a jeweller’s residence in Dhuri has been traced to a case of mistaken identity, with police arresting three accused while the alleged mastermind remains absconding.
According to police, the actual target of the April 20 attack was the father-in-law of the main culprit, Rohit alias Ghoda. However, due to the close proximity of houses, the attackers mistakenly hurled a petrol-filled bottle at the home of complainant Darshan Kumar.
The explosion triggered a fire that damaged the main gate and a car parked at the residence. No injuries were reported.
Senior superintendent of police Sartaj Singh Chahal said Rohit had hired three person—Vansh alias Kali, Sameer alias Kaka, and Sameer alias Poppy—to carry out the attack. All three, aged between 19 and 22, have been arrested.
Police said the accused confessed during interrogation that they acted on Rohit’s instructions, who allegedly wanted to settle scores with his father-in-law, Ranjit Singh, following a domestic dispute.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Punjab Prevention of Damage to Public and Private Property Act at Dhuri City police station.
Investigators have also recovered the motorcycle used in the crime. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest Rohit, and officials said more details will emerge once he is apprehended.
