Defence Minister Warns of Security Challenges from Hybrid Warfare, Cyber, and Space Threats

New Delhi : Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has emphasized that unconventional threats such as hybrid warfare, cyber threats, and space-based obstacles are emerging as significant challenges to the nation’s security apparatus. He noted that the global security landscape has become increasingly complex due to the convergence of internal and external security concerns. Speaking at a seminar on Advanced Technologies for Internal Security in New Delhi today, the Minister highlighted the need for a strategic approach to counter these evolving threats.

He pointed out that different regions of India face unique security issues, including insurgencies, left-wing extremism, and terrorism. Each of these threats requires a tailored response, and the government is working towards addressing them with innovative and technology-driven solutions. The Minister stressed the importance of focusing on specific areas of concern to develop better and more effective countermeasures.

Mr. Singh underscored the significance of collaborative efforts between various institutions and agencies in tackling security challenges. He asserted that a well-coordinated approach among security forces, intelligence agencies, and research organizations is crucial in ensuring national safety and stability. The government, he stated, is making concerted efforts to foster better synergy among these institutions.

The Defence Minister also lauded the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for its contribution to strengthening India’s security infrastructure. He praised DRDO for developing several niche technologies that have been instrumental in modernizing the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and other security agencies. He emphasized that these advancements have enhanced the operational capabilities of security forces, enabling them to effectively counter emerging threats.

Additionally, Mr. Singh highlighted the importance of indigenous technological development in the defence sector. He reiterated the government’s commitment to the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, aimed at boosting self-reliance in defence manufacturing and innovation. The Minister emphasized that leveraging advanced technology is essential to staying ahead in modern warfare and security management.

Addressing the role of cybersecurity, the Minister noted that cyber threats pose a significant challenge to national security. He called for the development of robust cybersecurity frameworks and the adoption of state-of-the-art technologies to protect critical infrastructure. The rapid advancement in cyber capabilities by adversaries necessitates continuous innovation and vigilance in this domain.

Furthermore, Mr. Singh acknowledged the growing role of space-based threats in contemporary security concerns. He pointed out that the militarization of space and the potential risks posed by anti-satellite weapons require India to bolster its space security capabilities. He emphasized the need for strategic planning and investment in space defence technologies to safeguard national interests.
