TN Guv leaves Assembly without delivering customary New Year Address

Chennai, Jan 6, 2025: Amid ongoing disagreements over several issues between the Raj Bhavan and the ruling DMK, Tamil Nadu Governor R. N. Ravi on Monday attended the Legislative Assembly for his customary New Year address but exited abruptly without delivering it. Following the recital of the traditional Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu prayer song, seeking the blessings of the Tamil Mother Goddess, the Governor departed the House in apparent displeasure, leaving the address prepared by the government undelivered. This marked the third consecutive year of discord between the Governor and the State government during the Assembly session. In 2023, the Governor had omitted mentions of the Dravidian Model of governance and made alterations to the prepared speech. Similarly, in 2024, he read only the first two and the last paragraphs of the address prepared by the DMK government, leading to the adoption of a resolution against his actions by the State Assembly. This year, however, the Governor left without even beginning his address. A statement later issued by the Raj Bhavan claimed the Governor had refrained from delivering the address due to the alleged disrespect caused by the omission of the National Anthem.
