BJP Defends Anurag Thakur’s Caste Remark; Congress Moves Privilege Motion Against PM Modi

Congress Accuses PM Modi of Breaching Parliamentary Privilege; BJP Claims Opposition is Confused

New Delhi, July 31 2024 : A heated political dispute erupted in Parliament today following controversial remarks made by BJP MP Anurag Thakur about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s caste. The Congress party has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of encouraging a “serious breach of parliamentary privilege” by sharing Thakur’s remarks on social media.

Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi submitted a notice to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, seeking a privilege motion against PM Modi. Channi criticized Modi for amplifying Thakur’s “objectionable” comments, which had been expunged from parliamentary proceedings.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge condemned Thakur’s comments as an attempt to insult Gandhi and accused PM Modi of inflaming sentiments by sharing the remarks online. Kharge also criticized the Prime Minister for his apparent endorsement of Thakur’s speech.

Congress deputy leader Gaurav Gogoi joined the protest, accusing the BJP of mocking the demand for a caste census and insulting marginalized communities. Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Manoj Jha also condemned Thakur’s remarks and criticized Modi for supporting them.

In response, BJP leaders defended Thakur, with MP Sudhanshu Trivedi questioning why the opposition took the remarks personally. Union Minister Giriraj Singh and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju argued that questioning Gandhi’s caste was valid and accused Congress of hypocrisy.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai expressed surprise at the outrage, suggesting that questioning caste is inherent to discussions on caste census.
