Jharkhand Bandh Over Student Protest as BJP Targets Police Action, JMM Rejects Charges

Ranchi, August 11, 2026; A statewide shutdown called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was observed in Jharkhand on Tuesday in protest against the alleged use of force on students during a demonstration in Ranchi. The ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), however, rejected the opposition’s allegations and accused the BJP of trying to turn the students’ agitation into a political issue.

The bandh was announced after a large gathering of candidates preparing for examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) marched towards the state Assembly on Monday. The protest was related to allegations of irregularities in recruitment examinations and demands for changes in the selection system.

The BJP described Monday’s confrontation between protesters and security personnel as a serious incident and said the statewide shutdown was intended to register its opposition to the government’s handling of the agitation. Party workers assembled at several locations, including Harmu Chowk in Ranchi, where leaders described the incident as a matter of concern for students.

BJP leaders also alleged that restrictions were imposed on opposition representatives during Monday’s mobilisation, claiming that several party functionaries were prevented from joining the protest.

The JMM strongly disputed the BJP’s version of events. Party leader Manoj Pandey said security personnel had exercised restraint and maintained that force was used only when necessary to manage the situation. He also rejected claims involving excessive measures against protesters.

Pandey accused the BJP of seeking political advantage from an issue raised by students. He maintained that the recruitment-related concerns should be addressed as a matter concerning the aspirants rather than being converted into a confrontation between political parties.

The students themselves have sought to maintain distance from the political dispute. One of the protesters said the student movement was continuing independently and that the group did not wish to comment on the bandh announced by any political organisation.

The agitation has centred on demands linked to the JSSC-CGL examination and other recruitment-related concerns. Protesters have called for the cancellation of the examination, an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation into alleged irregularities and changes to the recruitment process.

With the BJP’s bandh bringing the dispute into the political spotlight, the controversy over the handling of the student movement is expected to remain a key issue in Jharkhand. The students, meanwhile, continue to press the state authorities for action on their examination and recruitment-related demands.
