NEW DELHI, Mar 27,2025: BJP MP Hema Malini on Thursday highlighted the growing threat of “deepfake” technology in the Lok Sabha, emphasizing that its misuse against celebrities cannot be ignored. She stressed that such manipulated content not only damages reputations but also severely impacts the mental well-being of victims.
Speaking during Zero Hour, Malini pointed out that artificial intelligence and deepfake technology have rapidly advanced across the world. While these innovations offer numerous benefits, they also pose significant risks, particularly to public figures, including those in the film industry.
“Many of us in the entertainment industry have dedicated years of hard work to earn our recognition and respect. However, this dangerous misuse of technology has led to the creation of multiple fake videos that falsely portray individuals, causing immense harm to their reputation,” she stated.
She further added that such fabricated content spreads rapidly on social media, leaving victims struggling to control the damage. “These viral videos not only distort reality but also take a severe toll on the emotional and mental health of those targeted,” Malini asserted.
Expressing deep concern, she urged the government to introduce strict measures to curb the unethical use of deepfake technology and ensure that legal frameworks are in place to hold perpetrators accountable.
Her remarks come amid rising concerns over AI-generated content being misused for misinformation, defamation, and privacy violations. With the increasing accessibility of such technology, experts have called for greater digital literacy and stronger cyber laws to counteract its harmful effects.
Malini’s statement has sparked a broader debate on the urgent need for regulation in the AI and deepfake space, reinforcing the responsibility of authorities to protect individuals from malicious digital attacks.
