New Delhi, Jan 30,2025: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been submitted to the Supreme Court following the devastating stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, calling for urgent measures to improve safety protocols for pilgrims from across the nation.
The tragic incident, which occurred on the morning of January 29 at the Sangam area, claimed the lives of at least 30 individuals and left over 60 others injured.
Advocate Vishal Tiwari, who filed the PIL, has requested the court to order all states to set up facilitation centers in Prayagraj to provide vital safety information to pilgrims.
The petition further stresses the importance of multilingual announcements and signage to guide visitors and reduce confusion, ensuring a safer experience for people from various linguistic backgrounds.
Additionally, the petitioner has recommended that small medical teams, consisting of doctors and nurses, be deployed by state governments, in collaboration with Uttar Pradesh authorities, to manage medical emergencies throughout the Maha Kumbh.
The plea also seeks accountability, urging action against officials and authorities whose alleged negligence contributed to the stampede.
The PIL calls for the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a report on the January 29 stampede and initiate legal proceedings against those responsible for the incident.
