Govt Issues Notices to Ola and Uber Over Differential Pricing for iPhone and Android Users

New Delhi, Jan 24, 2025: The Indian government has taken action against cab aggregators Ola and Uber for allegedly implementing differential pricing based on the type of smartphone users own. Notices have been issued to both companies by the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), following several complaints from consumers about inconsistent pricing for iPhone and Android users.

Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Pralhad Joshi, confirmed the issuance of these notices and emphasized the importance of addressing consumer grievances to ensure fair business practices. In a post on social media platform ‘X’, Joshi stated, “In response to earlier observations of apparent differential pricing based on the type of mobile phone used (iPhone/Android), the Department of Consumer Affairs, through the CCPA, has issued notices to Ola and Uber seeking their explanations.”

The issue arose when consumers reported discrepancies in the fare shown by these ride-hailing platforms, even when the same route, pickup location, and destination were selected. Complaints frequently highlighted that users with iPhones were being charged more than those using Android devices, despite no apparent reason for the difference. Many social media users took to platforms to voice their frustration over what they perceived as unfair pricing practices.

The CCPA’s action comes after a growing number of complaints from customers who noticed this pricing variation. As part of its probe, the consumer watchdog has asked both Ola and Uber to explain their pricing mechanisms, focusing particularly on the factors contributing to these discrepancies. The CCPA’s involvement signals the government’s commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness in the operations of major service providers, especially those affecting everyday consumers.

The consumer ministry is now awaiting responses from both companies, which are expected to clarify whether their pricing policies are indeed influenced by the type of smartphone being used by customers. The authorities have also sought details on how these pricing models are structured and if there are any other underlying reasons for these differences.

The practice of charging different prices based on the device could lead to broader concerns about discrimination and market fairness. Consumer rights activists have called for more stringent regulations to protect users from such differential pricing practices, which they believe are not transparent and could lead to unfair treatment of certain customers.
