Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) to Evolve into Centers of Excellence under CM Yogi’s Vision

Lucknow, July 12 2024 : The Uttar Pradesh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is advancing its commitment to agricultural innovation with a transformative initiative aimed at turning Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) into Centers of Excellence. This initiative, part of the “Lab to Land” vision, marks a significant step towards making agriculture more self-reliant and employment-oriented across the state.

Initially launched to ensure each district had at least one KVK, with larger districts housing up to two, the program has expanded significantly. Currently, there are 89 KVKs operational throughout Uttar Pradesh, playing pivotal roles in agricultural extension and education.

In a strategic move towards excellence, 18 KVKs were selected in the first phase of transformation in December 2023. These centers, strategically affiliated with agricultural universities, cover diverse agricultural regions of the state. Each center has been tasked with focusing on specific agricultural sectors, tailored to local climates and traditions.

For instance, in Gorakhpur, known for its favorable horticultural conditions, the focus is on crops like mango, guava, and litchi. The local KVK is developing a nursery with a variety of mango plants and promoting unique varieties suited to the region’s needs. Furthermore, initiatives such as fruit processing units for jams and pickles, along with training programs for women’s self-help groups in gardening and agricultural practices, underscore the comprehensive approach of the Centers of Excellence.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized the importance of these centers becoming self-sufficient hubs of agricultural knowledge and entrepreneurship. The government has allocated a budget of Rs 26 crore 36 lakhs for this transformational project, with initial funding already released to the selected districts.

The districts slated for the KVK Centers of Excellence include Mau, Balrampur, Gorakhpur, Sonbhadra, Chandauli, Banda, Hamirpur, Bijnor, Saharanpur, Baghpat, Meerut, Rampur, Badaun, Aligarh, Etawah, Fatehpur, and Mainpuri. This initiative not only promises to enhance agricultural productivity but also to empower local communities through sustainable agricultural practices and skill development.
