Om Birla Responds to Accusations of Muting, Asserts Speaker’s Zero Control Over Mics”

"Speaker Clarifies Role Amidst Claims of Mic Control in Parliament"

New Delhi 1 July 2024: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday strongly objected to allegations from Opposition members that he had muted their microphones in the House, emphasizing that the control of microphones does not lie with the Speaker.

“It has come as a surprise to me that several MPs have accused the Speaker of muting their mics. The Speaker only announces the speaking order; mic controls are not within the Speaker’s purview,” he clarified. Birla emphasized that Speakers from all political backgrounds adhere to the same procedural norms in running the House.

Last week, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi had claimed that his microphone was silenced while addressing the NEET issue.

Additionally, Birla addressed concerns about members appending additional statements before or after taking their oath.

“According to Article 99 of the Indian Constitution, every MP has a constitutional duty to take the oath as a member of this House… Adding any statement before or after the oath is outside constitutional regulations. Members should refrain from such practices,” he stressed, noting that oath-taking procedures have specific rules that must be respected.
