Governor urges communal harmony while honouring heroes of Anglo-Manipur War

Imphal- Manipur observed Khongjom Day on Thursday with solemn tributes and a strong message of unity, as Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla called on citizens to uphold communal harmony and respect for the rule of law.

Speaking at the Khongjom War Memorial in Thoubal district, the Governor emphasised that the true tribute to the martyrs lies in maintaining integrity in public life and working towards the welfare of all sections of society. The day commemorates the bravery of Manipuri warriors who fought in the Anglo-Manipur War against British forces.

The ceremony began with the Governor and Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh leading dignitaries in offering floral tributes at the memorial. Wreaths were also laid in honour of military leader Paona Brajabashi, followed by a ceremonial gun salute.

Addressing the gathering, Bhalla described the occasion as both emotional and significant, highlighting the courage and sacrifice of those who defended Manipur. He urged citizens to draw inspiration from their resilience and work collectively towards peace and development.

The Chief Minister, in his address, expressed pride in the state’s history and appealed to people to maintain peace amid ongoing tensions. Referring to a recent tragic incident involving the deaths of two children in a bomb attack, he conveyed condolences and assured continued support to affected families.

He also urged the public to avoid protests or actions that could disrupt development work or create divisions, stressing the importance of unity in building a stronger Manipur.
