Govt Sets Up Technology and Policy Expert Committee to Strengthen AI Governance Framework

New body to provide strategic, technical and policy inputs to AI Governance and Economic Group

New Delhi : The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, has constituted the Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC), a standing advisory body aimed at strengthening the country’s artificial intelligence (AI) governance framework.

The committee will provide specialised technical, policy and strategic expertise to support the functioning of the newly formed AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG), which is tasked with steering India’s AI policy direction.

As an advisory body to the AIGEG, the TPEC will offer expert inputs to facilitate informed decision-making on policy design, regulatory frameworks and India’s engagement in global AI governance platforms.

Chaired by the Secretary of MeitY, the committee comprises experts from academia, the technology industry and digital policy domains. It has been mandated to ensure that AI governance decisions are backed by a contemporary understanding of technological advancements, regulatory approaches and global best practices, while remaining aligned with India’s socio-economic and strategic priorities.

Within the broader AI governance architecture, the AIGEG will define strategic direction and coordinate policy across the government, while the TPEC will play a critical role in translating complex technical and policy issues into actionable insights.

The institutional framework aims to create a dynamic and future-ready approach to AI governance, ensuring coherence across strategic, technical and policy dimensions, and supporting India’s ambitions in emerging technologies.
