Delhi Police Flags 250 Illegal Betting Apps Ahead of New Gaming Rules

Authorities step up crackdown as stricter online gaming regulations come into force from May 1

New Delhi- The Delhi Police has identified and reported more than 250 illegal betting and gambling applications, intensifying efforts to curb online fraud and unauthorised gaming activities.

Officials said these apps, many of which are locally developed, have been flagged for involvement in betting operations and cheating scams. The crackdown comes ahead of the implementation of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, which will come into effect from May 1 and aims to strengthen oversight of online gaming platforms.

According to police sources, cyber units from the Crime Branch and Special Cell have been compiling data on suspicious platforms since late 2025. Investigators noted that earlier gaps in jurisdiction and regulatory clarity allowed several such apps to operate without scrutiny.

Authorities have also reached out to major digital platforms, including app stores and social media companies, requesting them not to host or promote these flagged applications. Further action is expected as investigations continue and more leads emerge.

Recent enforcement efforts have led to multiple arrests linked to illegal betting operations. In one case, individuals were apprehended for running a cricket betting platform, while another operation uncovered a racket with international connections.

Officials said that under the new law, designated cyber officers will have enhanced powers to investigate offences swiftly and ensure compliance. The move is expected to tighten control over illegal betting networks and protect users from financial fraud.

Police added that details of further action and arrests will be shared with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology as part of coordinated enforcement efforts.
