Delhi HC orders tight security for Uttam Nagar victim’s family amid rising threats

Court directs police to ensure protection and act against inflammatory online content

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday directed the Delhi Police to provide robust protection to the family of a 26-year-old man killed during a violent clash in Uttam Nagar during the Holi period, taking note of ongoing threat concerns and the spread of provocative content online.

Justice Girish Kathpalia recorded the State’s submission that adequate security arrangements are already in place, including CCTV surveillance and deployment of police pickets in the locality. The court was informed that a police picket has been stationed directly outside the family’s residence to ensure their safety.

The court also directed the concerned Station House Officer to share his personal mobile number with the family, enabling immediate contact in case of any threat or emergency.

Addressing the digital aspect, the bench noted that more than 250 inflammatory and communally sensitive videos linked to the incident have already been removed from social media platforms. The petitioners were granted liberty to flag any further such content for prompt action.

The matter relates to the killing of 26-year-old Tarun in Uttam Nagar on March 4, 2026, following a minor altercation that escalated into violence. According to the family’s plea, the incident began with a dispute over a balloon thrown by a child during Holi celebrations.

An FIR has been registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Police have identified 22 accused persons, of whom 18 have been arrested, while others remain absconding.

The victim’s family, who are key witnesses, alleged continued threats and intimidation by the accused and their associates, including attempts to pressure them into withdrawing from the matter. The court noted that a recent incident reported on April 13 is being examined by an officer of ACP rank for further action.
