Jabalpur– A deeply emotional moment unfolded during rescue operations at the Bargi Dam, where divers recovered the body of a woman holding her child tightly inside a submerged cruise vessel that overturned amid severe weather conditions.
According to officials, the incident occurred on Thursday evening when a sudden storm caused the tourist boat to lose balance and sink in the reservoir. So far, nine fatalities have been confirmed, while 22 passengers have been rescued.
Members of a specialised diving unit described the recovery operation as both physically demanding and emotionally overwhelming. The woman and child were found trapped within the wreckage, locked in an embrace that made separation extremely difficult for the rescuers.
The underwater search posed significant risks due to the collapsed structure of the vessel. Divers had to navigate through confined spaces filled with twisted metal and sharp iron rods, often cutting through barriers to access different compartments. One team member narrowly escaped after getting stuck briefly inside the wreck.
Rescuers also highlighted the near-zero visibility underwater, which complicated efforts further. Tight passageways and debris forced the team to proceed cautiously while continuing the search for missing passengers.
Authorities confirmed that five bodies, including that of a child, have been recovered so far from the site. The operation is ongoing, with teams continuing efforts to locate others feared trapped.
Officials are expected to launch a detailed inquiry into the circumstances leading to the accident, including safety measures and weather preparedness.
