Trump Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Russia-Ukraine Conflict

US President Donald Trump has called for an immediate ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine and warned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to make peace or risk losing American support. The statement came after a heated exchange between the two leaders over the path to a Ukraine-Russia truce during a high-stakes meeting at the White House in Washington last night.

The sharp disagreements led to the collapse of crucial negotiations between the US and Ukraine on rare earth minerals and security guarantees, which were being considered as part of broader discussions on a potential truce in Ukraine’s prolonged war with Russia. Following the tense meeting, President Trump told reporters that he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to negotiate a peace deal, further fueling speculation over a shift in US foreign policy towards Ukraine under his administration.

The confrontation took a dramatic turn when President Trump and Vice President JD Vance publicly accused President Zelensky of endangering millions of lives by refusing to consider a compromise with Russia. They warned that Ukraine’s stance might escalate the conflict into a global crisis, potentially triggering World War III. The public altercation, which unfolded before international media, underscored the growing rift between the US and Ukraine under Trump’s leadership.

In response, President Zelensky stood firm, telling President Trump that Ukraine cannot compromise with President Putin in resolving the war. Following the contentious discussion, Zelensky abruptly left the White House without signing the crucial minerals agreement, a deal that was expected to enhance Ukraine’s access to US technology and defense assistance. The scheduled joint news conference was also cancelled, further highlighting the severity of the diplomatic fallout.

Shortly after the meeting, President Trump took to social media, stating, “President Zelensky can come back to the White House when he is ready for peace.” In contrast, President Zelensky also issued a statement, emphasizing that Ukraine is committed to achieving a “just and lasting peace” and will continue working towards that goal.

The tense encounter drew swift reactions from international leaders. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged Ukrainians to remain “strong, brave, and fearless” in the face of mounting pressure. Similar messages of support for Ukraine poured in from France, Spain, Poland, Sweden, Norway, Latvia, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania, reinforcing Europe’s continued backing for Kyiv.

Meanwhile, Russia and its allies extended full support to President Trump and Vice President Vance. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova praised the restraint shown by the US leaders, calling it a “miracle” that they managed to remain composed in their interaction with Zelensky. Similar statements of endorsement came from Hungary and other pro-Russian governments, signaling a potential realignment in geopolitical alliances.
