India Flags Maritime Security Concerns at UN, Calls for Safe Passage in Strait of Hormuz

At the United Nations General Assembly, India voiced serious concern over the rising risks to commercial vessels passing through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, stressing the urgent need to ensure uninterrupted maritime movement.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Harish Parvathaneni, highlighted that ongoing hostilities in West Asia have increased threats to civilian shipping and crew safety. He emphasized that any disruption in this vital corridor could have far-reaching consequences for global trade and energy supply chains.

India strongly criticized incidents involving attacks or interference with commercial vessels, stating that such actions endanger innocent lives and violate international norms governing free navigation.

The Indian delegation made it clear that the safety of merchant ships and their crew must remain a priority, adding that the current situation demands immediate global attention and coordinated efforts.

The Strait of Hormuz serves as one of the world’s most crucial maritime chokepoints, carrying a significant portion of global oil shipments. India noted that any instability in this region directly affects its energy security and economic interests.

India urged all stakeholders involved in the conflict to act responsibly and work towards restoring normal shipping operations without delay. It reiterated the importance of maintaining open and secure sea lanes to support global commerce.
