Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Says Article 370 Abrogation Was ‘Greatest Tribute’ to Syama Prasad Mookerjee

Leaders Pay Homage on Balidan Diwas, Highlight Mookerjee’s Contribution to National Unity and Ideological Legacy

New Delhi, June 23, 2026: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday paid tribute to Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his death anniversary, describing the abrogation of Article 370 as the “greatest floral tribute” to his legacy and vision for national unity.

Addressing a commemorative event in the national capital, the Chief Minister said that Dr. Mookerjee dedicated his life to the cause of national integrity and public service. She added that decisions and initiatives taken in the direction of strengthening unity reflected the continuation of his ideals.

“The abrogation of Article 370 served as the greatest floral tribute at his feet,” Gupta said, while also referring to the formation of a nationalist government in West Bengal as another significant milestone connected with his legacy.

She stated that the Delhi government would continue working on the principles of public welfare, national interest and governance inspired by Dr. Mookerjee’s thoughts and vision.

Union Minister and Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra also paid homage to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, recalling his role in shaping the nationalist movement and laying the ideological foundation that later influenced the formation of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Malhotra said Dr. Mookerjee’s commitment to the principle of “Nation First” and his dedication to public life continue to inspire generations across the country.

The tribute programme was attended by Union Minister Harsh Malhotra, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, members of the Delhi Cabinet and several BJP leaders, who offered floral tributes to Dr. Mookerjee.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid homage to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 73rd death anniversary, describing him as a patriot, scholar and statesman whose commitment to national interest continues to motivate citizens.

The Prime Minister highlighted Dr. Mookerjee’s courage, conviction and dedication towards India’s development, stating that his contributions remain an important part of the nation’s collective memory.

Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, which later became the ideological predecessor of the Bharatiya Janata Party. His death anniversary on June 23 is observed as ‘Balidan Diwas’ in remembrance of his sacrifice in Kashmir in 1953.

Political leaders and supporters continue to remember Dr. Mookerjee for his role in debates over national integration, constitutional issues and the future direction of Indian politics.
