A major health scare unfolded in Bihar’s Saharsa district after more than 150 schoolchildren reportedly became unwell following the consumption of a mid-day meal served at a government school in Baluaha village.
According to district officials, several students complained of stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting shortly after eating lunch at the middle school on Thursday. The children were first rushed to a nearby primary health centre before many of them were shifted to larger medical facilities for further treatment.
Authorities confirmed that over 100 students are receiving care at Saharsa Sadar Hospital, while dozens of others have been admitted to Mahishi Public Health Centre. Doctors monitoring the children said most of them are stable and responding positively to treatment.
Saharsa District Magistrate Deepesh Kumar stated that the administration acted immediately after receiving reports of the incident. He assured families that the situation is under control and there is no reason for panic. Some children were also reported to have mild fever and weakness.
The incident created panic among parents after local residents alleged that a snake was discovered inside a container used for storing cooked lentils at the school. Family members claimed that around 200 children had already eaten the food before the suspected contamination came to light.
Officials have not confirmed these allegations yet. The district administration said food samples from the school kitchen have been collected and sent for laboratory examination. Authorities added that further action will be taken once the test reports are received.
The shocking incident has once again raised concerns about food safety and hygiene standards in government school meal programmes.
