Silchar- A shocking case from Cachar district has led to the arrest of a 28-year-old carpenter accused of killing his pregnant wife, intensifying concerns over domestic violence and marital disputes.
According to police officials, the incident occurred in the Madhurbond locality, where the couple had been living on rent. The victim, a 26-year-old woman who was seven months pregnant with her third child, was rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital late at night but was declared dead upon arrival.
Family members of the deceased alleged that the woman had faced repeated abuse in the past. They claimed visible injury marks, including signs of strangulation, raised serious doubts about the husband’s version of events. Relatives further stated that she had previously left her matrimonial home due to harassment but was persuaded to return.
The accused, identified as Beru Miya Laskar, has denied involvement in the death, maintaining that his wife died by suicide following emotional distress linked to his extramarital relationship.
Police registered a case at the local station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to murder. Investigators confirmed that the man was initially detained and later formally arrested, with the court granting police custody for further questioning.
Officials revealed that digital evidence, including an audio message allegedly sent by the victim before her death, is being examined as part of the investigation. The postmortem report is awaited and is expected to play a crucial role in determining the exact cause of death.
Authorities stated that while preliminary findings indicate homicide, the final charges will depend on forensic results and supporting evidence gathered during the probe.
