Bilaspur (Haryana)- A tragic road accident in Bilaspur claimed the lives of an elderly couple after a speeding car swerved off the road and rammed into them while they stood on a pavement near a bus stand.
Police identified the victims as 62-year-old Maan Singh and his wife, 61-year-old Shakuntala Devi, residents of Bhudka village in Pataudi. The couple had reportedly returned from Panchkula and were waiting by the roadside for their son to pick them up when the incident occurred on Sunday night.
According to investigators, the accident took place between 8:30 pm and 9 pm near the Sidhrawali bus stand when a fast-moving Tata Nexon veered off its lane and climbed onto the pavement, striking the couple with force. Eyewitnesses suggested that the driver may have either fallen asleep or was under the influence of alcohol, leading to the loss of control.
After the collision, the driver abandoned the vehicle at the scene and fled. Passersby quickly alerted authorities, and an emergency response team rushed the injured couple to a nearby hospital in Bhiwadi, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
A police official said the couple’s son had nearly reached the location and witnessed the aftermath of the crash. The vehicle involved has been seized for further examination.
Based on a complaint filed by the victims’ son, a case has been registered at the Bilaspur police station under provisions related to rash driving and causing death by negligence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police spokesperson Sandeep Turan said a notice will be issued to the registered owner of the car to determine who was behind the wheel at the time of the accident. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the accused.
The bodies have been handed over to the family following post-mortem examination, officials said.
