India Strengthens Maritime Cooperation by Transferring Watercraft to Sri Lanka

Colombo, April 27, 2026: India has formally transferred a personal watercraft to Sri Lanka as part of ongoing efforts to deepen maritime cooperation and enhance operational capabilities in the Indian Ocean region. The move reflects continued engagement between the two countries in strengthening security and humanitarian collaboration.

The handover was carried out as part of a broader initiative aimed at improving maritime readiness and supporting coastal security operations. Officials from both sides described the development as a positive step in defence cooperation.

The watercraft is expected to assist Sri Lankan authorities in carrying out patrol duties and improving response efficiency in coastal areas. It will also support training activities related to maritime safety and surveillance.

India has been consistently supporting capacity building initiatives for Sri Lanka across multiple sectors including defence preparedness and disaster response mechanisms. This latest transfer adds to a series of collaborative efforts.

The initiative reflects the shared understanding between the two neighbours regarding the importance of secure and stable maritime routes in the region. Both countries depend heavily on safe sea lanes for trade and connectivity.
