Supreme Court Orders SIT Probe into Minor’s Killing in Ghaziabad

Top court directs UP DGP to form team led by senior officer and include women officials

New Delhi- The Supreme Court of India has directed the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death of a four-year-old girl in Ghaziabad.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, directed that the SIT be formed promptly and include women police officers. The court specified that the team should be led by an officer of the rank of commissioner or inspector general.

The order came after the victim’s family expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation conducted by local police. The court said the SIT would examine all concerns raised by the family and also look into the role of two private hospitals that allegedly refused treatment to the child.

The bench further directed the SIT to submit a supplementary report before the trial court within two weeks. Meanwhile, proceedings in the trial court have been put on hold until the report is filed.

The case relates to an incident reported last month in which the child was found in a critical condition and later declared dead at a government hospital. Earlier hearings saw the court raise concerns over delays in registering the case and the manner in which the investigation was initially handled.

Appearing for the state, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati informed the court that a chargesheet has already been filed and trial proceedings had begun.

The court’s latest direction aims to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter, while addressing concerns raised about the initial response by authorities.
