Rekha Gupta Distributes Bicycles to Schoolgirls, Performs Kanya Pujan

Initiative aimed at promoting girls’ education and empowerment during festive occasion

New Delhi : Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday performed Kanya Pujan in Pitampura and distributed bicycles to around 1,000 girl students from nine schools.

She reiterated her commitment to ensuring that every girl in the national capital can complete her education without any obstacles.

Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said, “Every daughter in Delhi should be able to complete her education without any hindrance — finish school, graduate, and become whatever she aspires to be. The government will work to remove all obstacles in her path. Many girls face difficulties commuting between home and school. Through this Vidyavahini initiative, bicycles will be provided to every girl in Class 9 so that she can travel to and from school through Classes 10, 11, and 12. This is the form of Durga, this is the form of Saraswati.”

She also described the girls as embodiments of Durga and Saraswati, underlining their potential to bring pride to the city and the country.

“They will bring glory to this city and our country in the years to come. On behalf of the government, I salute each of my daughters and bless them. May they progress and achieve their dreams. The government will ensure they receive every facility needed to complete their education,” she added.

Earlier, Gupta shared a message on X on the occasion of Kanya Pujan, describing daughters as symbols of strength and divine blessings.

“Daughters are symbols of good fortune, embodiments of strength, and sacred blessings. On this occasion of Kanya Pujan, worshipping daughters filled my heart with deep emotion. Durga Ashtami teaches us that every daughter embodies the divine energy. Their love and respect bring purity and auspiciousness into life,” she wrote.

“This is my prayer to the Mother: May her blessings be upon all, may happiness and prosperity reach every home, and may the love of daughters always illuminate our lives. I offer my salutations at the feet of the Mother,” the post added.

Kanya Pujan is an important ritual performed during the Navratri festival, especially on the eighth (Ashtami) or ninth (Navami) day. It symbolises respect for feminine power (Shakti) and the belief that young girls embody the form of Goddess Durga.

Navratri, which means ‘nine nights’ in Sanskrit, is a Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Durga and her nine forms, collectively known as Navdurga.
