New Delhi, 26 March 2026 – The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)of India has taken suo motu cognizance of reports that 16 people have died in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh since mid-February after consuming adulterated milk. At least four others with similar symptoms are reportedly undergoing treatment. Preliminary investigations indicate that the milk was contaminated with ethylene glycol, a toxic substance that can cause multi-organ failure. The suspected source of the contaminated milk has been traced to a dairy in Narsapuram village, which supplied milk to more than 100 households in the affected areas, including Lalacheruvu, Chowdeshwarannagar, and Swarupnagar.
The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Andhra Pradesh, requesting a comprehensive report within two weeks. The Commission has emphasized that the report should cover the current health status of affected individuals, the progress of investigations into the incident, and details of any compensation provided to the next of kin of the deceased.
According to media reports from 23 March 2026, residents of the affected areas began experiencing severe health complications in mid-February, including abdominal pain, vomiting, anuria, and acute renal dysfunction. Most victims were either elderly or young children, highlighting the particularly vulnerable nature of those impacted by the contamination.
The NHRC noted that if the details of the media reports are confirmed, the deaths raise serious concerns regarding violations of human rights, including the right to life and access to safe consumables. The Commission’s intervention aims to ensure prompt accountability and remedial action by the state authorities.
Investigations are ongoing, and officials are expected to provide detailed information on the measures taken to prevent further incidents, including monitoring of dairy products in the region and strict enforcement of food safety regulations. The NHRC has reiterated the importance of transparency and timely updates to ensure that justice is served for the victims and their families.
