New Delhi- The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY) has enabled more than 7.7 lakh households across the country to record zero electricity bills, reflecting the growing impact of rooftop solar adoption under the flagship programme.
Launched in February 2024, the scheme aims to install rooftop solar (RTS) systems in one crore residential households by FY 2026–27, with a total financial outlay of ₹75,021 crore.
As of 9 December 2025, over 19.45 lakh rooftop solar systems have been installed nationwide, benefitting 24.35 lakh households. Data reported by DISCOMs show that 7.71 lakh consumers have experienced zero energy charges during at least one billing cycle following installation.
Under the scheme, Central Financial Assistance (CFA) amounting to ₹13,926 crore has been disbursed for more than 17.74 lakh installations. In addition, over 8.3 lakh collateral-free loan applications have been sanctioned to support households in adopting rooftop solar systems.
To improve affordability and ensure financial viability for beneficiaries, the scheme offers collateral-free loans at a concessional interest rate of 5.75% (Repo Rate + 0.50%). These loans are designed to reduce upfront costs and encourage wider participation.
For rural households and economically weaker sections, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has also issued guidelines for installing rooftop solar systems through Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) and RESCO models, enabling easier access and faster deployment.
The details were shared by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
States such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Rajasthan have emerged as leading contributors in terms of installations, households benefitted and subsidy disbursal. Gujarat alone accounts for over 4.9 lakh rooftop solar installations, while Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have also recorded significant adoption and loan uptake.
The PM Surya Ghar scheme is a key pillar of India’s residential clean energy transition, reducing household electricity expenses, promoting decentralised renewable power generation and supporting national climate and energy security goals.
