Mumbai : The Maharashtra Cyber Cell has issued a second summons to stand-up comedian and YouTuber Samay Raina, directing him to appear in person tomorrow to record his statement in connection with the India’s Got Latent controversy. Raina was initially summoned yesterday but failed to appear before the authorities, leading to the issuance of a fresh notice.
The case revolves around allegations that content from India’s Got Latent, a satirical online event, was deemed objectionable, sparking legal action against multiple individuals associated with it. While details of the complaint remain undisclosed, the Cyber Cell is actively investigating the matter. Raina, who is currently abroad, had requested permission to provide his statement via video conferencing from the United States, citing prior commitments in the U.S. and Canada. However, the Cyber Cell rejected his request, insisting that he must record his statement in person. Officials stated that allowing a virtual deposition could set a precedent that may hinder future investigations.
Apart from Samay Raina, several well-known content creators and influencers have been named in the complaint. Ranveer Allahbadia, Ashish Chanchlani, and Apoorva Makhija have already appeared before the authorities and recorded their statements. Sources suggest that their testimonies are being evaluated as part of the broader investigation into whether the content of India’s Got Latent violated any legal provisions. Multiple FIRs have been registered in Maharashtra and Assam against the accused individuals, intensifying legal scrutiny over the issue.
The controversy has ignited a debate over freedom of expression and the boundaries of satire in India. Supporters of the accused argue that the content was created for entertainment purposes and should be protected under artistic and creative expression. On the other hand, complainants insist that certain aspects of the content were offensive and warranted legal action.
Legal experts suggest that the case could have wider implications for online content creators in India. With increasing scrutiny of digital platforms and social media influencers, regulatory authorities are expected to take a stricter stance on content that could be perceived as controversial or inflammatory.
