Nagpur on Alert: Section 144 Imposed Following Violent Clashes

Nagpur : Tensions erupted in Nagpur’s Mahal area last evening following rumours about the alleged vandalism of religious symbols, sparking communal unrest between two groups. The situation quickly escalated into violence, with groups engaging in stone pelting and setting vehicles on fire. The disturbances led to chaos in the locality, prompting immediate intervention by law enforcement agencies to restore order.

Police forces were swiftly deployed in the affected areas, including Mahal and Chitnis Park, where the violence was at its peak. To disperse the unruly mob, security personnel used teargas shells and carried out cane charges. Cyber teams were immediately mobilized to analyze CCTV footage to identify those involved in the clashes. In a swift crackdown, police carried out combing operations and arrested around 15 individuals suspected of instigating violence. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible for disturbing communal harmony.

Senior leaders, including Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, have urged citizens to maintain peace and refrain from believing in unverified rumours. They appealed for calm and assured that law enforcement agencies are taking necessary measures to prevent further escalation. Despite these appeals, the unrest spilled over into other parts of Nagpur late into the night. Reports emerged of an antisocial mob torching parked vehicles and damaging houses, increasing security concerns.

To contain the situation, Nagpur Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Singal imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), restricting large gatherings in select areas under the jurisdiction of the Nagpur City Police. The police have also deployed additional personnel and reinforcements from the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) to maintain law and order. Officials stated that the security arrangements will remain in place until normalcy is fully restored.

The incident has raised concerns about the spread of misinformation and its potential to incite violence. Authorities have warned against circulating or believing in unverified reports that could fuel further tensions. They have also urged residents to report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.

Guardian Minister of Nagpur, Chandrashekhar Bawankule, is scheduled to visit the Mahal area at 10 a.m. today to assess the situation and engage with local leaders and authorities. His visit is expected to provide reassurance to the citizens and demonstrate the administration’s commitment to restoring peace.
