Air India Mumbai-New York Flight Diverts Back Due to Security Threat Mid-Air

An Air India flight en route to New York was forced to return to Mumbai mid-air following a security threat received by the crew. The Boeing 777 aircraft, which had taken off from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport around 2 AM, was flying over Azerbaijan when the threat was reported. In response, the flight changed course and made its way back to Mumbai, where it landed safely at around 10:30 AM.

Upon landing, the aircraft was immediately isolated in a designated security area, and bomb detection and disposal teams carried out thorough checks. Security personnel, including the Mumbai Police and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), were deployed to inspect the aircraft and luggage for any suspicious items. Passengers were safely deboarded and taken for additional security screenings.

Sources indicate that the threat is believed to be a hoax, but officials are taking no chances and have launched a full-scale investigation to trace the origin of the threat. Authorities are also reviewing security protocols and the communication that led to the emergency decision.

Following the incident, Air India released a statement ensuring that the safety of passengers and crew remains their top priority. The airline assured passengers of full cooperation and alternative travel arrangements to minimize inconvenience.

Meanwhile, aviation security agencies, along with Mumbai Police, are examining whether the threat was linked to previous false alarms targeting airlines. Officials are also checking for any possible cyber threats or calls made to the airline’s control room.

This incident comes amid heightened global aviation security concerns, prompting authorities to take every alert seriously. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and other security agencies are expected to analyze the details of the case to prevent such disruptions in the future.

Passengers affected by the disruption have been provided accommodations, and Air India is working on rescheduling the flight to ensure minimal delays for those traveling to New York.
