CM Atishi Accused of Violating MCC During Delhi Assembly Polls, Case Registered

New Delhi : Delhi Assembly elections, a controversy has erupted involving Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, the AAP candidate from Kalkaji, and the Delhi Police. Atishi has slammed the police, accusing them of punishing her for speaking out against her BJP challenger, Ramesh Bidhuri, for allegedly “openly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).” This comes after Delhi Police registered two cases against Atishi and her supporters on Tuesday.

The first case was filed against Atishi herself for allegedly violating the MCC, while the second case was filed against two AAP supporters, Ashmit and Sagar Mehta, who were arrested for allegedly assaulting and obstructing a police officer. The incident occurred early Tuesday morning at around 1 am when the police were called to resolve a dispute. According to the police, they had responded to a call from both the AAP and BJP camps.

DCP South East, Ravi Kumar Singh, stated that when the police arrived at the scene, they found two BJP members who were not voters from the area, and action was taken against them. When the police responded to a second call, they encountered a large group of AAP workers who had gathered around 10 vehicles. Despite repeated requests to disperse, the group did not comply with the prohibitory orders and MCC guidelines, prompting the police to take action.

The situation escalated when a few AAP workers allegedly misbehaved with the constables and snatched a mobile phone from a police officer who was filming the incident, leading to injuries. As a result, the police filed an FIR against the AAP workers for obstructing official duties and assaulting a police officer.

DCP Singh confirmed that a case had also been filed against Atishi for violating the prohibitory orders and the MCC. He added that actions were taken against all individuals present at the location, including Atishi, for their involvement in the incident.

In response, Atishi accused the Delhi Police of attempting to silence her for raising concerns about her opponent Ramesh Bidhuri’s actions. She argued that she was being punished for speaking out about the BJP candidate’s alleged misconduct during the election campaign. Atishi’s supporters have condemned the police action, claiming that it is politically motivated and aimed at stifling dissent during a crucial phase of the election campaign.

The situation has further fueled tensions between the ruling AAP and the BJP, with both parties accusing each other of misconduct and violating election norms. With the election just around the corner, these developments are likely to add to the already heated political atmosphere in Delhi.
