5 Dead, Dozens Injured as Stage Collapses at Religious Event in Baghpat

Baghpat : Tragedy struck the Nirvana Laddu Parv event in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district as a makeshift stage collapsed on Tuesday, resulting in the death of at least five people and injuries to over 60 others, including Jain disciples and police personnel. The incident occurred during the religious event dedicated to the first Tirthankara of Jainism, Bhagwan Adinath.

The collapse led to chaos and immediate rescue operations. Authorities, including district administration and police personnel, swiftly launched efforts to save those trapped under the debris. Rescue operations were ongoing as of Tuesday morning to ensure no one remained unaccounted for.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences and took cognizance of the tragic incident. He directed district authorities to provide immediate relief to the injured and assured swift action to address the situation. The Chief Minister also conveyed his wishes for the speedy recovery of those injured in the mishap.

Baghpat District Magistrate Asmita Lal, along with Superintendent of Police Arpit Vijayvargiya, visited the district hospital to monitor the treatment of the injured. DM Asmita Lal confirmed five fatalities. However, she mentioned that two additional deaths were suspected, though no official confirmation was available at the time.

Eyewitness accounts revealed the devastating impact of the stage collapse, with several injured being rushed to nearby hospitals. Many sustained severe injuries, and efforts are being made to ensure adequate medical care is provided to all affected individuals.

The makeshift stage had been constructed for the grand religious celebration, which witnessed a large gathering of devotees and officials. Preliminary inquiries suggest structural instability might have been the cause, but a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the exact reasons for the collapse.

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced relief measures for the affected families and injured individuals. Local authorities have been directed to ensure adequate medical support and financial assistance to those affected.
