Karnataka : At least ten people lost their lives, and 16 others were injured when a truck they were traveling in overturned near Arabail Ghat in Yellapur taluk of Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district. The truck, which was transporting vegetables and fruits, veered off the road and fell into a nearby gorge. Nine individuals were declared dead at the scene, while one more succumbed to injuries at the hospital.

The accident occurred early in the morning when the truck was on its way from Savanur in Haveri district, heading towards the weekly vegetable market in Kumta. All the deceased were from Savanur, highlighting the tragic impact on their community. The truck, which had a full load of produce, apparently lost control on the hilly terrain near Arabail Ghat, leading to the devastating crash.

The injured victims were immediately rescued and rushed to Karnataka Medical College in Hubballi for medical treatment. Authorities are closely monitoring their condition, with some reported to be in critical state. Local police, along with rescue teams, worked swiftly to extricate those trapped in the truck and provide assistance to the survivors.

The accident has left the local community in shock, as many were familiar with the victims who were part of the regular transportation of goods for the weekly market. The incident underscores the risks associated with driving through the difficult terrain of the Western Ghats, where such accidents are not uncommon due to sharp turns and slippery roads.

Local authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident. While the truck’s loss of control is suspected to be due to the challenging road conditions, factors such as vehicle overloading and driver fatigue will also be examined.

In response to the tragedy, there are calls from local leaders and residents for improved safety measures in the area. These could include better road signage, maintenance of roads, and the installation of guardrails to prevent similar incidents in the future.
