Australian Formula 1 (F1) driver Oscar Piastri achieved his first F1 championship victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix yesterday. Piastri, a rookie in the sport, led a McLaren one-two finish with British-Belgian driver Lando Norris. However, the race took a dramatic turn when team orders required Norris to relinquish the lead, slightly overshadowing the celebration.
The tension began with McLaren’s pit stop strategy during the second round of stops. Norris was brought in first to counter the challenge from Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. As a result, Norris rejoined the track ahead of Piastri, causing frustration for the Australian.
A tense intra-team battle ensued, with McLaren issuing several calls for Norris to hand the lead back to Piastri. Norris initially resisted but finally yielded on Lap 68 of the 70-lap race, slowing down to let Piastri pass. Piastri took full advantage of the opportunity and crossed the finish line two seconds ahead of Norris. Lewis Hamilton finished third, securing his 200th career podium for Mercedes.
