India’s U-23 fencers shine in Nigeria with record 17-medal Commonwealth Championship haul

Lagos, August 10, 2026; India U-23 Fencing delivered a landmark performance at the Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Nigeria, with the Indian contingent winning 17 medals across the individual events.

The Indian contingent finished the championship with four gold, four silver and nine bronze medals, underlining the growing strength and depth of the country’s emerging fencing talent.

India managed to secure podium finishes in all six individual events across the three fencing disciplines — sabre, foil and epee — in both the men’s and women’s categories.

The men’s sabre event proved particularly successful for India, with Nikhil Wagh taking the gold medal. Lakshay Badser finished second, while Ashwini Arya and Laishram Moramba shared the bronze medals, giving India a complete sweep of the podium.

Tejas Patil added a silver in men’s foil, while Hemash Sanasam secured bronze. In men’s epee, Lokesh Vemani claimed silver, with Shaurya Ashwini and Godwin Anbkess finishing with bronze medals.

The Indian women also made a strong impression. Joys Ashita won the women’s foil title, while Kanaglakshmi secured silver. Prachi Lohan emerged victorious in women’s epee, with Nivedhya Nair and Anupriya taking bronze medals.

India also dominated the women’s sabre competition. Jeferlin secured the gold medal, Aakhari finished with silver and Shreya Gupta added another bronze to the team’s tally.

The performance marks a significant achievement for India’s junior fencing programme and provides further evidence of the growing pool of athletes capable of competing successfully at the international level.

Fencing Association of India Secretary General Rajeev Mehta congratulated the athletes, coaches, support staff and families, while stressing the importance of providing young fencers with greater exposure to international competition.

The association said the results would contribute to its broader effort to develop athletes capable of making the transition to the senior international circuit and competing at major championships.

With 17 medals from the U-23 competition, India has further strengthened its position as an emerging force in Commonwealth fencing and provided its young athletes with valuable international experience.
