World Lion Day 2026: Asiatic lion population rises to 891, India celebrates conservation gains

New Delhi, August 10, 2026; India on Monday marked World Lion Day with renewed focus on protecting the Asiatic lion, as the country’s conservation efforts continue to show significant results.

Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav highlighted the progress made in safeguarding the species, pointing to the rise in India’s Asiatic lion population from 523 in 2015 to 891 in 2025.

The minister credited forest personnel, wildlife experts, local communities and other stakeholders for contributing to the sustained conservation of the endangered big cat. He also stressed the importance of protecting lion habitats while maintaining a balance between development and environmental preservation.

The latest population figures underline the progress achieved through long-term conservation measures, particularly in Gujarat, which remains the principal habitat of the Asiatic lion.

Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi also used the occasion to call for continued efforts to protect wildlife and conserve the country’s biodiversity. He described the Asiatic lion as a symbol of pride as well as a shared responsibility.

The Gir and Greater Gir landscapes in Gujarat have remained at the heart of India’s lion conservation programme. Protection of habitats, monitoring of wildlife and participation of local communities have played an important role in supporting the species.

World Lion Day is observed annually to raise awareness about lions, their habitats and the challenges facing their survival. In India, the occasion also highlights the importance of preserving the Asiatic lion and ensuring that conservation gains are sustained for future generations.
