New Delhi July 30 2024 : In response to the devastating landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district, Congress leaders, including Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, and AICC General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, have expressed their condolences and urged United Democratic Front (UDF) workers to assist those affected.
The landslides, which struck the hilly region on Tuesday, have resulted in 23 fatalities. Rahul Gandhi, who represents Wayanad in the Lok Sabha, has communicated with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Wayanad district collector, receiving assurances that rescue operations are actively underway.
In a statement, Rahul Gandhi expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. “I hope those still trapped are brought to safety soon,” he said. Gandhi has also emphasized the importance of coordination among agencies and has requested the establishment of a control room to oversee relief efforts. He pledged to speak with Union Ministers to ensure all possible assistance is provided to Wayanad.
Mallikarjun Kharge, in a post on X, expressed his pain over the disaster and urged both state and central governments to expedite relief and rescue operations. “My deepest condolences to the families of the bereaved,” Kharge stated. He called on Congress leaders and workers to collaborate with medical professionals and follow up with agencies to support the victims effectively.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed her sadness over the destruction caused by the landslides, offering her condolences and prayers to those who lost loved ones. She urged the government to take immediate action to accelerate relief efforts and called on UDF workers to provide support and comfort to those affected.
Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K C Venugopal described the news of the landslides as devastating. He conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims and urged UDF workers to assist authorities in relief operations. Venugopal highlighted that Rahul Gandhi had spoken with the Kerala Chief Minister and Wayanad district collector to address the situation promptly. He also mentioned discussions with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who assured necessary relief assistance.
Venugopal emphasized the need for both the Centre and the Kerala Government to conduct search and rescue operations urgently to prevent further loss of life.
