Virudhunagar Firecracker Factory Blast Turns Deadlier, Toll Rises to 25 as Owner Goes Missing

Death toll climbs as identification of victims remains a challenge

Tamil Nadu: The toll from the devastating explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district has climbed to 25, making it one of the region’s deadliest industrial accidents in recent years, officials said.

Authorities said identification of victims has become a major challenge, with many bodies reportedly charred beyond recognition. Police indicated that families have yet to claim several bodies amid uncertainty over identities, while efforts continue to establish the full extent of the tragedy.

The blast occurred at a firecracker unit near Kattanarpatti, where preliminary findings suggest a possible explosion in a chemical mixing shed. Officials said the number of workers present at the time may have far exceeded permitted limits, raising serious concerns over safety compliance.

The situation worsened during rescue operations when a second blast reportedly occurred while debris was being cleared, injuring multiple responders, including police and fire personnel. Unexploded materials at the site also complicated emergency operations for hours.

Investigators are also looking into allegations that the factory was operating despite restrictions on a rest day. District authorities have flagged possible regulatory and safety violations, while the factory owner is reported to be absconding.

The tragedy has triggered anger among families and residents, with demands growing for accountability and stricter enforcement in the firecracker manufacturing hub. The state government has ordered a high-level inquiry as relief and investigation efforts continue.
