Dehradun- The father of a 24-year-old student from Tripura who died following an alleged racial assault in Dehradun has accused the police of negligence and claimed that the prime accused has evaded arrest due to administrative lapses.
The victim, Anjel Chakma, was attacked in December last year after reportedly objecting to racial remarks directed at him and his younger brother in the Selaqui area. He succumbed to his injuries later that month, triggering outrage and demands for swift action.
His father, a serving personnel with the Border Security Force, alleged that despite the passage of several months, the key accused—identified as Yagyaraj Awasthi—remains absconding and is believed to have crossed into Nepal. He further claimed that there has been no sustained effort to trace the suspect and accused the local police of inaction.
The family also alleged that a formal complaint was registered only after intervention by a Member of Parliament, raising concerns about the initial response to the case.
Police officials, however, said that five of the six accused have been arrested, including two minors. They added that legal steps are underway to bring back the absconding suspect, with a lookout notice already issued and further international alerts being processed.
The victim’s father described his son as a promising student who had secured a job offer before his death, adding that the incident has deeply affected the family, particularly the younger sibling who witnessed the aftermath.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing, even as the case continues to draw attention over issues of racial discrimination and policing accountability.
