New Delhi, March 10, 2024– In a surprising turn of events, Brijendra Singh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament from Hisar, Haryana, resigned from the party’s primary membership on Sunday, citing “compelling political reasons.” The former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer subsequently joined the Indian National Congress in the presence of Congress party chief Mallikarjun Kharge.
Expressing gratitude to the BJP leadership, including National President Sh. JP Nadda, Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi, and Home Minister Sh. Amit Shah, Singh acknowledged the opportunity given to him to serve as the Member of Parliament for Hisar. Senior Congress leaders, Ajay Maken, Mukul Wasnik, and Deepak Babaria, were present at Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence during Singh’s formal induction into the Congress.
Singh highlighted the alliance between BJP and JJP (Jannayak Janata Party) in Haryana, specifically mentioning an issue raised during a rally in Jind on October 2. He revealed that the decision on the BJP-JJP alliance was one of the reasons behind his departure from the BJP.
Brijendra Singh, a Member of Parliament from Haryana’s Hisar, is a former IAS officer who served the nation for 21 years before taking voluntary retirement. In 1998, he secured the 9th rank in the Civil Services Examination. Singh pursued his MA in modern history from JNU and hails from Haryana’s Jind.
Notably, he is the son of former union minister and BJP leader Birender Singh and the great-grandson of Jat icon Chhotu Ram. Despite coming from an influential political family, Singh has emphasized that he is not a product of nepotism, asserting that he charted his own path before successfully entering mainstream politics.
Singh made his electoral debut in 2019, defeating JJP’s Dushyant Chautala and Bhavya Bishnoi, who was then with the Congress. Last year, he publicly supported wrestlers protesting against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment allegations.
Speculation surrounded Singh in 2022 regarding a potential move to the Aam Aadmi Party, but he later dismissed these rumors, stating that he had no plans to join the party.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi welcomed Singh into the INDIA bloc, praising his accomplishments as a former bureaucrat and successful MP, anticipating that his presence would add value to the alliance.
