Madhya Pradesh, February 27, 2025 – Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah attended a tribute event in Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh, to mark the 15th death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Nanaji Deshmukh. The event was graced by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla, and several other dignitaries.
During his address, Shah highlighted Nanaji Deshmukh’s significant contributions to Indian politics and rural development. He emphasized that Nanaji’s principles and dedication to public service would continue to inspire future generations. Shah also underscored Nanaji’s efforts in implementing Deendayal Upadhyay’s Antyodaya philosophy, which focused on uplifting the last person in the social and economic hierarchy.
Shah also inaugurated the unveiling of Deendayal Upadhyay’s statue and the presentation of ‘Ram Darshan,’ a depiction of Lord Ram’s life. He praised Nanaji as a transformational leader whose influence extended beyond his lifetime.
Amit Shah recalled Nanaji’s journey, from his early association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to becoming the General Secretary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh. He played a crucial role in establishing the party’s foundation in Uttar Pradesh alongside Deendayal Upadhyay. Nanaji dedicated every moment of his life to the nation and remained a respected figure in politics, earning universal acceptance without facing opposition from any political faction.
Shah stated that Nanaji excelled in multiple fields, including arts, literature, industry, and social service, earning widespread respect. At the age of 60, he chose to step away from active politics to focus on implementing the philosophy of Integral Humanism (Ekatma Manav Darshan) in real life. His unwavering integrity allowed him to remain untouched by political corruption while actively working to eliminate social evils.
Nanaji Deshmukh’s small-scale rural development experiments significantly transformed India’s villages. He implemented Antyodaya principles, working to uplift the poorest sections of society. His contributions led to economic and social advancements in rural areas.
Amit Shah remarked that Deendayal Upadhyay and Nanaji Deshmukh were two stalwarts who shaped the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. While post-independence policies were largely influenced by Western ideologies, Upadhyay introduced the concept of Integral Humanism, which emphasized an economic model rooted in India’s cultural heritage. This philosophy continues to guide India’s rise on the global stage.
Shah also noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embraced the principles of Deendayal Upadhyay and Nanaji Deshmukh, implementing welfare initiatives that have improved the lives of millions of underprivileged citizens. Over the past decade, Modi’s government has provided housing, sanitation, clean drinking water, LPG cylinders, food security, electricity, and healthcare support to 60 crore people.
Amit Shah lauded Nanaji’s leadership during India’s Emergency period, highlighting his role in uniting the opposition and resisting authoritarian rule. He was instrumental in forming the Janata Party, establishing the ‘Nation First’ ideology that continues to guide Indian politics.
Nanaji’s personality embodied a blend of RSS values, Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s nationalism, and Mahatma Gandhi’s concept of Gram Swaraj. Recognizing his extraordinary contributions, he was honored with the Padma Vibhushan. Later, Prime Minister Modi conferred upon him the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.
Nanaji Deshmukh was also the founder of the Saraswati Shishu Mandir schools, which have grown into a vast network providing quality education across India. The first Saraswati Shishu Mandir was established in Gorakhpur and has since flourished into a major educational initiative.
Shah concluded his speech by emphasizing Nanaji’s lifelong dedication to cultural nationalism and social welfare, which continues to inspire the nation. He also highlighted the significance of Chitrakoot Dham, where Lord Ram spent a major part of his exile, as a sacred site for millions of Indians.
The event paid a fitting tribute to the enduring legacy of Nanaji Deshmukh and his unparalleled contributions to Indian society and governance.
