GAIL Accelerates Towards Net Zero: Sets 2035 Target for Carbon Neutrality

Leading India's Energy Transition with Enhanced Environmental Commitments

New Delhi 28 June,2024: GAIL (India) Ltd, a prominent state-owned gas utility, has announced an ambitious move to advance its net zero carbon emission target from 2040 to 2035. This strategic decision underscores GAIL’s commitment to sustainability and aligns closely with India’s broader environmental goals.

The revised target, approved by the GAIL Board, focuses on reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. These include emissions directly from owned sources and those from purchased energy, respectively. GAIL’s initiative involves a comprehensive approach, integrating renewable energy adoption, green hydrogen production, CO2 valorization projects, and extensive afforestation efforts.

Sandeep Kumar Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of GAIL, emphasized the company’s dedication to promoting natural gas as a cleaner fuel option. He highlighted that accelerating the emission reduction timeline reinforces GAIL’s leadership in India’s energy sector and its commitment to sustainable development.

India aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2070, and GAIL is strategically positioning itself to contribute significantly to this goal. Director R K Singhal emphasized GAIL’s proactive efforts in combatting climate change, aiming to create a healthier environment for future generations.
