New Delhi: The Delhi High Court is set to deliver its verdict on former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea seeking the recusal of Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma from hearing proceedings linked to the excise policy case.
The order is expected to determine whether the current bench will continue hearing the matter or if the case could be reassigned, making the ruling significant for the future course of the high-profile legal battle.
The recusal plea arose after Kejriwal and other accused questioned the judge’s continued hearing of the case, citing concerns related to potential conflict of interest. The matter gained further attention after Kejriwal appeared virtually to press for his additional submissions to be placed on record.
The case stems from proceedings related to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy, in which a trial court had earlier discharged Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and others, a decision later challenged by the Central Bureau of Investigation before the high court.
Opposing the recusal request, the CBI argued that accepting such a plea could create a broader precedent affecting judicial functioning, while maintaining there was no basis to question impartiality in the present matter.
With the verdict due today, the ruling is expected to have a direct bearing on how proceedings in the excise policy case move forward.
