₹1.25 Lakh Crore Boost for Delhi Roads: Centre’s Mega Push to decongest Capital and enhance connectivity, Says CM Rekha Gupta

Mega projects like the underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road, new elevated roads, and highways connecting Delhi to Katra and Amritsar to begin soon: CM Rekha Gupta

New Delhi, June 4, 2025- Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, addressing a press conference today, informed that a high-level meeting was held under the chairmanship of Union Road and Transport Minister  Nitin Gadkari to strengthen Delhi’s Road and transport infrastructure. Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Shri V.K. Saxena, Union Minister of State for Road and Transport Shri Harsh Malhotra, Cabinet Ministers of Delhi, Members of Parliament, and senior officials from all concerned departments were present at the meeting.

The Chief Minister stated that currently, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is implementing several projects in Delhi worth ₹35,000 crore. Earlier, projects worth ₹64,000 crore has already been completed. Additionally, DPRs (Detailed Project Reports) for upcoming projects worth ₹24,000 crore are already prepared and ready for execution.

She said that several key initiatives are being undertaken to decongest Delhi and make it pollution-free. These include the construction of an approximately 7-kilometer-long underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road; an elevated road from INA to the airport—which will later connect to Faridabad and Gurugram; the highway connecting Delhi to Katra and Amritsar, which will be linked to the Urban Extension Road (UER)-II; and the second extension of UER-II, which will connect Alipur to Tronica City and the Delhi–Dehradun route. These new routes will enable seamless travel between Haryana, Dehradun, and Noida without the need to enter Delhi. A feasibility study is also underway for a tunnel from Sarai Kale Khan to IGI Airport.

The Chief Minister added that productive discussions between the Union Ministry of Transport and the Delhi Government have yielded concrete results. She informed that major roads—such as Rohtak Road, Punjabi Bagh to Nangloi, Ashram to Badarpur, and MG Road—have now been handed over to NHAI. All these roads will be made signal-free, and construction work will begin soon. She further stated that NHAI will now take full responsibility not only for the construction of roads but also for the development of proper drainage systems, side lanes, and necessary infrastructure. Earlier, such tasks were handled by multiple agencies, leading to issues like waterlogging and unconnected drainage. Now, these problems will be resolved solely by NHAI at its own expense, with support from the Delhi PWD.

The Chief Minister expressed gratitude for a major connectivity initiative by which a roadmap will be constructed from Inderlok Metro Station and along the Munak Canal up to Sonipat, approximately twenty kilometres in length benefiting a large number of commuters between Haryana and Delhi which otherwise used to take only the highway from Azadpur via Mukarba Chowk. This will also lead to decongestion of major roads across Delhi and will benefit people of Western Delhi in particular. She informed that the DPR project will be prepared soon and NHAI will take up this project on priority.

The Chief Minister shared that NHAI has sanctioned ₹150 crore for the construction of RUBs (Road Under Bridges) and ROBs (Road Over Bridges) to eliminate bottlenecks caused by railway crossings. She also highlighted that a total of ₹1.25 lakh crore worth of decongestion projects has been initiated in Delhi by the Central Government. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari for their support and leadership in helping realize the vision of a better, more accessible, and pollution-free Delhi.

She also praised the NHAI for reusing Delhi’s solid waste and inert construction material in road construction. During the meeting, it was reiterated that all future road projects in Delhi would maximize the use of such waste materials. This initiative will not only reduce the city’s landfill sites but also repurpose the waste into valuable construction resources.

The Chief Minister concluded by stating that all these initiatives will serve as milestones in transforming Delhi into a world-class, beautiful, and green city. She thanked the Central Government for approving several more key projects for Delhi and affirmed that with continued support from the Centre, the dream of a developed and global-standard Delhi will soon become a reality.
