Mumbai, April 24, 2026: Union Commerce and Industry Minister and Member of Parliament from Mumbai North, Piyush Goyal, inaugurated the Bharat Taxi Driver Onboarding Initiative in Mumbai, marking a significant step towards strengthening urban mobility and improving driver livelihoods through digital and cooperative platforms.
The event was held on April 23, 2026, at Kamla Vihar Sports Club in Kandivali West, where hundreds of auto rickshaw and cab drivers, transport union representatives, and cooperative society members participated.
The initiative aims to expand access to structured digital mobility platforms that enhance transparency, improve participation, and create better income opportunities for drivers.
Addressing the gathering, Piyush Goyal emphasised the importance of cooperative and technology driven models in strengthening India’s evolving urban transport ecosystem. He said Bharat Taxi enables drivers to participate as partners while benefiting from digital tools that improve earnings, transparency, and dignity of labour.
He added that such initiatives represent the future direction of urban mobility systems in India, focusing on inclusion and sustainability.
The onboarding drive is part of a broader effort to strengthen driver first mobility systems across major cities by simplifying registration, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring consistent access to ride demand.
With Mumbai now added to the expanding network, Bharat Taxi is already operational across several cities including Delhi NCR, Gujarat, Chandigarh, and Lucknow.
According to recent operational data, the platform has onboarded over 5.17 lakh drivers and 50 lakh customers, with nearly 10 lakh rides being completed every month across different cities.
Bharat Taxi Chief Operating Officer Vivek Pandey said Mumbai represents a high potential market and strong support from local driver unions has boosted confidence in expanding the platform and building a robust driver ecosystem.
The expansion aligns with the vision of Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah to scale Bharat Taxi across all major cities in the next three years, positioning Mumbai as a key milestone in the national mobility roadmap.
The initiative reflects the government’s continued commitment to promoting technology enabled, inclusive, and cooperative urban mobility frameworks tailored to the needs of drivers and commuters.
