Dhaka August 6 2024 : In a dramatic turn of events, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned amid escalating protests and fled the country. She landed at Ghaziabad’s Hindon Air Base near New Delhi in a C-130 Hercules aircraft on Monday evening. This development prompted the Indian government to convene an all-party meeting to address the current political situation in Bangladesh.
The protests, which have been intensifying over the past weeks, resulted in significant unrest on Monday. Reports indicate that at least 135 people were killed during clashes involving police firings, mob beatings, and arson across Bangladesh. The Dhaka Tribune reported that at least 96 people died in police firings alone.
The violence also spread to the outskirts of Dhaka, with at least 18 individuals killed in the Savar and Dhamrai regions. Dhaka Medical College Hospital sources confirmed that around 500 people were brought in with various injuries, including gunshot wounds, and 70 have been admitted for treatment.
Following Sheikh Hasina’s departure, chaos ensued as crowds entered Ganabhaban, the Prime Minister’s residence, and other public buildings. Local media reported looting from these premises, including the Parliament building.
As the situation remains volatile, the Indian government has called for an urgent all-party meeting on Tuesday to discuss the implications of the crisis and the next steps for India-Bangladesh relations.
