GURUGRAM,25 JUNE 2026: India successfully hosted the 11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting in Gurugram, Haryana, on June 25 under its BRICS Chairship 2026. The meeting was held under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” and brought together Energy Ministers, Vice Ministers, senior officials, and representatives from key international organizations.

Delegates from BRICS member nations discussed pressing global energy challenges and explored opportunities for deeper cooperation across the energy sector. Representatives from the International Solar Alliance (ISA), Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA), and New Development Bank (NDB) also participated in the deliberations.

Guided by the energy track theme “Sarvesham Urjam (Energy for All)”, discussions centered on three key priorities: energy security and sustainability, energy access and equity, and technology and innovation. The ministers emphasized the importance of resilient energy systems, diversified energy sources, clean energy access, smart grids, hydrogen value chains, energy storage, artificial intelligence, and digitalization of energy infrastructure.

Addressing the meeting, Union Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal highlighted India’s remarkable energy transformation over the past decade. He noted that India has become the world’s third-largest producer and consumer of electricity, with nearly 540 GW of installed power capacity and more than half of it coming from non-fossil fuel sources.

The minister also showcased India’s rapid renewable energy growth, particularly in solar power, which has expanded from around 3 GW in 2014 to over 154 GW today. He highlighted flagship initiatives such as PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and India’s leadership in global platforms including the International Solar Alliance and Global Biofuels Alliance.

A major outcome of the meeting was the launch of the BRICS Digital Centre of Excellence for Smart Grids and Energy Storage, aimed at promoting knowledge-sharing, capacity building, and policy cooperation among member countries. Ministers also adopted the BRICS Guiding Principles on Smart Grids and Energy Storage and reviewed progress on a joint report on hydrogen value chains.

The meeting concluded with the adoption of the 11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ Joint Communiqué, reaffirming the bloc’s commitment to energy security, sustainability, innovation, affordable energy access, and strengthened international cooperation. Delegates appreciated India’s leadership and agreed to continue collaboration under China’s BRICS Chairship in 2027.
