New Delhi, June 4: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has successfully implemented a face authentication system in the Civil Services and Indian Forest Service (Preliminary) Examination 2026, marking a major technological step towards ensuring transparency and preventing impersonation in one of India’s most competitive examinations.
According to UPSC, the face authentication protocol was deployed across all 2,072 examination venues nationwide during the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026. The system verified in real time that the candidate appearing for the examination matched the photograph uploaded during the application process.
The technology was developed by UPSC with technical support from the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
The authentication process was carried out through mobile phones used by invigilators, eliminating the need for expensive hardware and simplifying logistics. UPSC stated that each authentication took only 6 to 8 seconds, ensuring smooth entry of candidates without causing long queues at examination centres.
More than 7,000 invigilators simultaneously used the application during the examination, while the system processed nearly 12,000 authentications per minute during peak entry hours. Around 5.5 lakh candidates appeared for the examination across the country.
UPSC Chairman Dr. Ajay Kumar said the initiative represents a significant step towards conducting impersonation-free examinations. He noted that the technology was developed in-house with support from NeGD and successfully implemented on a large scale within a short timeframe.
The Commission said detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) were shared with states, districts and examination centres, while multiple rounds of training were conducted for invigilators before deployment.
UPSC emphasized that the successful implementation of real-time face authentication reflects its commitment to maintaining examination integrity, transparency and fairness through technological innovation.
The Commission believes the new system will significantly strengthen the credibility of the Civil Services Examination process and help prevent malpractice in future examinations.
