3 Idiots Sequel Confirmed: Rancho Returns After 10 Years, Aamir Khan Reveals ‘Beautiful Story’

Aamir Khan confirms sequel with Rajkumar Hirani; film to revisit beloved characters a decade later

Mumbai– In a major update for Bollywood fans, Aamir Khan has officially confirmed that a sequel to the iconic film 3 Idiots is in development. The actor revealed that director Rajkumar Hirani is currently working on the project, with the story set to pick up 10 years after the events of the original film.

Speaking about the sequel, Aamir shared that he has already heard the storyline and described it as “wonderful” and “unusual,” retaining the humour and emotional depth that made the first film a cult classic. The script is still being refined, but the core idea has impressed the actor, who is excited to reprise his role as Rancho, also known as Phunsukh Wangdu.

The sequel is expected to bring back key cast members, including R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, and Kareena Kapoor Khan. Veteran producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra will also return, while screenwriter Abhijat Joshi continues to collaborate with Hirani.

Originally released in 2009, 3 Idiots—loosely based on Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat—became a cultural phenomenon, addressing themes of friendship and academic pressure. With its massive box office success and enduring popularity, expectations from the sequel are already sky-high.
